What you wanted to know about dust mites, but were afraid to find out.....

What are dust mites?

Mites are not spiders or insects, but in a group of their own closely related to ticks. House dust mites are very small in size and can only be seen with a microscope. They only live for about 2 - 4 months, but during its life, the dust mites produces about 200 times its weight in waste product and can lay up to 300 eggs!

Where do they live?

Dust mites thrive in warm humid conditions where their population explodes! Unfortunately for humans, the beds in which we sleep are warm and humid places year round. Mites live in mattresses, pillows, carpets, fabric, furniture and stuffed toys. They like to burrow into fabric to escape light.

Can dust mites become airborne?

Due to their light weight, dust mites can become airborne. Routine activities such as making the bed or children jumping and playing can send them floating in the air where they can distribute throughout the home and inevitably be inhaled as we breathe. About 80 percent of what we see floating in a ray of sunshine is dead skin, and we can only see 10 percent of the airborne pollutants.

Is there proof that dust mites can cause asthma and allergic reactions?

A national study suggests that a large number of homes contain dust mite allergen levels which pose a significant risk for the development of allergies and asthma. The house dust mite can actually cause asthma according to the National Asthma Campaign. Reducing exposure to these allergens may reduce the chance of developing allergies and asthma.

When dust mites are controlled, do conditions improve?

There is clear evidence that higher amounts of mite dust in houses are associated with more asthma in children and adults. However, people with house dust mite asthma can consistently improved over a few months when kept in a mite free environment. Mite control may also improve asthma in children with house dust mite asthma.
